Island escapes: how to plan the beach getaway you actually need

Some trips are about ticking off sights. An island escape is about the opposite: doing less, and doing it somewhere beautiful. The appeal is timeless, the slow rhythm of warm water, late breakfasts and evenings that smell of salt and sunscreen. The trick is matching the right island to the trip you actually want, because a party island, a diving island and a do-nothing island are very different holidays.

Why go

Islands offer the cleanest break from everyday life: the logistics end at the harbour, and the days unspool slowly. Whether you want world-class snorkelling, empty white-sand beaches, lively beach bars or a quiet cove and a good book, there is an island that does it better than anywhere on the mainland.

Choosing your island

Europe, for variety and easy access

The Greek islands range from the dramatic caldera of Santorini to the laid-back beaches of Naxos and the lunar coves of Milos, all linked by ferries. The Balearics and Canary Islands of Spain, and the volcanic Portuguese islands of Madeira and the Azores, are within easy reach of much of Europe for a shorter flight.

Tropical, for the classic dream

For barefoot luxury, the Maldives and Seychelles are hard to beat, while the Philippines (the islands and lagoons around El Nido and Palawan are spectacular) and Thailand offer extraordinary scenery at a wider range of prices. Across the Atlantic, the Caribbean spans everything from busy resorts to sleepy fishing villages.

Matching island to mood

Be honest about what you want. Some islands are built for nightlife, some for families, some for divers, and some for absolute quiet. Reading a couple of recent first-hand accounts before you book saves you from arriving somewhere that is lovely but wrong for the trip you had in mind.

Best time to visit

This is the single most important thing to get right, and it depends entirely on the region. Mediterranean islands are best from late spring to early autumn. Many tropical destinations have a distinct dry season that is far preferable to the wet or storm season, when rain and rough seas can disrupt travel. Always check the seasonal pattern for your specific destination, and remember that the shoulder season often brings the best mix of good weather, lower prices and fewer crowds.

Practical tips

Getting there and around

Islands usually mean a flight followed by a ferry or a smaller connecting flight, so build a little buffer into your travel days. If you plan to island-hop, check the ferry or flight schedules before you commit to an itinerary, as connections can be infrequent and seasonal.

Budget feel

The range is vast, from backpacker-friendly islands in Southeast Asia to the Maldives, where the resort is effectively the destination. Eating where locals eat, travelling in shoulder season and choosing guesthouses over resorts can transform the cost of the same patch of paradise.

Etiquette and safety

Look after the place that is looking after you: use reef-safe sunscreen, never touch or stand on coral, and follow local guidance on protected marine areas. Respect local customs and dress codes away from the beach, stay hydrated, and be cautious with sun and currents, which are easy to underestimate.

Where to base yourself

On a short trip, pick one island and settle in rather than hopping every couple of nights. On a longer trip, a hub-and-spoke approach, with one main base and a few day trips, usually beats constant moving.
