Local Tips - Lisbon
A quick, current orientation for a few days in Lisbon - how to move, spend, and blend in.

Getting around
- Get a Viva Viagem cardLoad it at any metro machine; the 'zapping' pay-as-you-go fare is far cheaper than single tickets and works on metro, trams, buses and ferries.
- Tram 28 early or lateThe famous route is mobbed 10:00–17:00 - ride before 09:00 or after 19:00 for a seat and photos.
- Mind the hillsLisbon is steep; the Elevador da Bica and Santa Justa lift save your legs and are covered by the transit card / cheap separately.
Money & tipping
- Cards everywhere, cash for small spotsMost places take contactless; carry €10–20 for tascas, markets and tram tickets.
- TippingNot obligatory - round up or leave 5–10% for good table service.
- Couvert isn't freeBread/olives brought to the table are charged; wave them away if you don't want them.
Etiquette & safety
- Pickpockets on Tram 28 & at miradourosLisbon is very safe, but keep phones and wallets zipped away in the busy tourist crush.
- Lunch is later than you thinkKitchens fill 13:00–15:00; dinner rarely starts before 20:00 - plan around it.
Neighbourhoods to know
- AlfamaOldest quarter - fado, viewpoints (Portas do Sol) and a maze of lanes; best wandered without a map.
- Time Out Market (Cais do Sodré)Great first-night sampler of top Lisbon chefs under one roof; go early to grab a table.
