How to pack smart without overpacking

Almost everyone packs too much. We throw in extra outfits for situations that never happen, and end up lugging a heavy bag for a few items we actually wear. The good news is that packing light is a skill, not a personality trait, and it comes down to a few repeatable habits.
Start with the trip, not the wardrobe
Before you open a drawer, write down what you will actually do each day. Beach mornings, a nice dinner, a long hike, a museum afternoon. When you pack for real activities instead of imagined ones, the list shrinks fast.
Build a small, mixable capsule
Choose a simple colour palette so most things go with most things. Aim for layers rather than bulk, and pick items that earn their place by working for more than one occasion. A scarf that doubles as a blanket on the plane is worth more than a second jacket you will not wear.
Respect the weather and the laundry
Check the forecast for your actual dates, and find out whether you will have access to laundry. If you can wash clothes mid-trip, you can pack for about half as long as the trip itself and still be fine.
The forgotten essentials
- A spare set of chargers and a small power bank.
- Any medication in your hand luggage, not the hold.
- Copies of key documents, stored separately from the originals.
- A foldable bag for the things you buy along the way.
Let Routepilot do the thinking
If you would rather not build the list yourself, our Packing List service does it for you. It looks at your destination, dates, planned activities and who is travelling, then produces a tailored, categorised list you can tick off before you leave. It is a small step that removes a surprising amount of pre-trip stress.
