Finding the local gems: how to eat and explore like a regular

Every city has two versions of itself: the one built for visitors, and the one locals actually use. The second one is almost always better, and it is not as hard to find as it looks.

Walk a few streets further

The cafe on the main square is convenient and overpriced. Walk five minutes in any direction and prices drop while quality often rises. Distance from the obvious landmark is a surprisingly good filter.

Eat where the queue is local

A short line of locals at lunchtime tells you more than any rating. Look for places that are busy with people who clearly live and work nearby, especially at the times locals actually eat.

Ask better questions

Instead of asking where the best restaurant is, ask someone where they ate last week, or where they take family who visit. You will get warmer, more honest answers and far better food.

Verify before you trek

Small, authentic places keep their own hours. Always check that somewhere is open before you cross town for it, and have a backup nearby just in case.

Skip the legwork

Our Local Tips service gives you a concise, on-the-ground list of authentic recommendations for a place, with each spot linked to Google Maps so you can check it yourself. It is like having a friend who lives there hand you a shortlist.
